2017 Events

WIAND will be meeting Thursday, February 2 at 4:00 pm at the new Food Finders Food Resource & Education Center, 1204 Greenbush St., Lafayette, Phone 765-471-0062. We will be taking a tour and learning about the Center, which includes a demonstration kitchen. Hopefully, you can leave work a bit early to meet at 4:00 pm.  You will receive 1 hour of CEU.

At our fall planning meeting, WIAND leadership suggested a community service project for National Nutrition Month, which ties in nicely to our February meeting at Food Finders. Food Finders would like to partner with WIAND for one or more food demonstrations in March – especially RDs demonstrating some recipes that are low cost, low sodium and high in flavor.  The food demonstrations can be scheduled on a Tuesday, 1:30 – 2:30 pm or Wednesday from 5:30 – 6:30 pm. We also have the opportunity to apply for a National Nutrition Month mini grant from IAND. So, let’s plan to brainstorm about the food demonstrations and mini grant at our February 2 meeting.

Unraveling the Mysteries of Indian Food

November 17, 2016 on the Campus of Purdue University

Mridvl Datta, Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University, offered an exceptional presentation about the intricacies of Indian Cuisine.  The WIAND members in attendance were provided with a tour of India in relation to Regional Cuisines and an in depth explanation of specific food terminology.  Tasting was provided through a full course meal to highlight the discussion.

WIAND Collaborating with Purdue University to Mentor Students

When the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University started a learning community for freshman dietetic students last year, it was the perfect opportunity for WIAND members to get involved. Some of the goals of the learning community are that students have an opportunity to interact with RDs from different areas of practice and discover the benefits of becoming involved in a professional organization. To accomplish these goals, the dietetic students and WIAND members travel by bus to a fun and engaging location. The RDs meet the students on the bus and have lots of opportunities to interact during the trip. Last year, the students and RDs went to Fair Oaks Farms to explore the Dairy and Pig Adventures. The trip this year will be to Eataly Chicago for the day. The RDs and students learn about food and nutrition on these excursions too!
